Consultancy firm FarrPoint has published a new study that highlights the economic impact of outages and the need for resilience across power and communications networks (broadband and mobile). The study claims that a 1-hour power outage affecting approximately 3,540 premises in the Morpeth area (Northumberland) may have resulted in approximately £48,500 of lost productivity.
The incident, which occurred at around 10am on Monday 2nd November 2026, suggests that even relatively short interruptions to power supplies can affect economic activity in an increasingly digitally dependent society. If an outage of similar scale were to continue for a full working day, FarrPoint estimates that the economic impact could approach £388,000.
“Loss of mains power will disable broadband routers and Wi-Fi networks. In some cases, mobile connectivity can also be affected where telecommunications infrastructure relies on local power supplies. This can disrupt businesses, remote workers, online services and everyday digital transactions,” claimed the report.
