OneWeb to battle Starlink for LEO satellite dominance in Brazil

This week, Brazil’s national communications regulator Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações (Anatel) has awarded OneWeb a licence to provide connectivity services in Brazil, saying that the move will greatly help to reduce the digital divide and bring connectivity to rural communities.
As part of the agreement, OneWeb has also agreed to build two satellite gateways in Brazil, in Petrolina and Maricá, from which the company will be able to expand its services across South America and the Caribbean…

Russian operators unite for 5G research JV

Today, MTS has become the latest mobile operator to join New Digital Solutions, taking a 25% stake in the business alongside its mobile rivals Rostelecom, MegaFon, and Vimpelcom.
The move means that all four of Russia’s largest mobile operators are now equal partners in the JV, which aims to explore the viability and availability of various spectrum bands for 5G services.

Phoenix Tower International buys WOM’s towers

Today, communications infrastructure specialist PTI has announced that it will acquire up to 3,800 mobile towers from Chilean mobile operator WOM. 
 
The deal, worth $930 million, will see WOM transfer ownership of roughly 2,334 sites at the time of closing, with an additional 1,466 sites to be transferred by 2024.
 
The deal represents PTI’s first foray in the Chilean market and will immediately make them the market leader in terms of tower ownership.
