The member‑owned and not-for-profit London Internet Exchange (LINX), which manages a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via 900 members (broadband ISPs, mobile operators, CDNs etc.), has revealed that their secondary LON2 network has hit 1Tbps (Terabits / sec) of traffic as organisations opt for a second peering option to improve security and resilience.
LINX currently operates two independent network fabrics in the city – LON1 and LON2, both interconnecting the 16 major data centre locations in London. LON1 is by far the largest of those networks (it’s already reaching a peak of nearly 9.8Tbps), but LON2 does things a bit differently by being a disaggregated platform (i.e. the separation of hardware and software components that carry out the main functions of a network). This helps to prevent outages from impacting a single point of failure.
Crucially, LON2 has also just been through its first full technology refresh since 2018, which saw upgrades being deployed across all 17 of its sites, moving onto Nokia IXR hardware running SR-Linux. The refresh made LON2 fully 400GE capable and scalable to handle future traffic demands. Well over 300 LINX members currently make use of LON2.
