Broadband and phone connectivity across a sizeable part of Bedfordshire in England, including the overhead gantry signs between junctions 12 and 13 on the M1, have suffered “extensive” disruption after criminals ripped up and stole some of Openreach’s core copper telecoms cables on part of Luton Road, near the town of Toddington.

According to Bedfordshire Police (BBC News), the first reports of criminal damage began coming in at about 11:30am on Thursday, although the disruption itself may have started at around 2am that same morning. Openreach promptly dispatched engineers to begin the repair work and Luton Road was closed.

A quick look at the local street works data shows that the network operator’s engineers are actively still working – near a local water treatment site – on the road to repair the costly damage (works ref: BC00806NOVWH9HVJ6J). Some of the impacted areas include Harlington, Toddington, Chalton and Tebworth, while a few local residents claim to have been told that the repairs could drag into Monday.
